BC Rabbit Program 2009

There will be a Rabbit program, starting in January - stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, the program needs new leaders - no experience necessary!! Leader courses are being offered in Kimberley this fall:

NOTES:
  • New coaches must begin their training by taking the Introduction to Community Coach (ICC) Workshop for cross-country skiing! Note that this is a sport-specific workshop, and should not be confused with the generic ICC (theory) courses advertised by the Coaching Assoc. of BC.
  • Coaches that have partially completed their NCCP Level 1 or Level 2 (previous NCCP system) will find instructions on how to proceed on the CCBC website.

NCCP PROGRESSION:
  • Introduction to Community Coaching (ICC) Workshop - Kimberley on November 21,22, 2008(10 hrs). This program is directed at coaches working with novice skiers and specifically children under six years of age (Active Start stage of athlete development). Workshops should be be held prior to the snow season and can be scheduled anytime between now and next winter.
  • Community Coaching (CC) Workshop - December 6,7, 2008 (16 hrs). This program is directed at coaches working with children six to nine years of age (FUNdamentals stage of athlete development). Snow is required, and workshops must be scheduled after the beginning of winter, 2008. If you are interested in these courses, or in being a Rabbit program leader, please contact Erna Jensen-Shill asap so that we can finalize registration, and get the new ski season and instruction for kids underway!

New building

We are putting the finishing touches on plans so that we can begin the construction of our new clubhouse/paralympic facility in the spring. The building will be 1200 sq. ft., with an additional 900 sq. ft. of deck. With south-facing windows letting in the sun and glimpses of the Rockies to the east, sitting by the woodstove after a ski will be better than ever. Many will no doubt be saddened to hear that our beloved biffy, which has served us so well over the years, will be removed, as the new building will include the modern wonders of indoor plumbing. Our current hut will be moved and reborn as a wax room. Paralympic funding will also be used next year to expand our parking area and to complete a new lighted sprint loop.

Trails update

A crew has been hard at work on our trails since mid-September. They have cleaned up huge amounts of logging slash and most of the slash has been chipped directly onto the trails. Most of our secondary (single track) trails have been reclaimed and covered with chips. This work has been funded though a federal government grant obtained by the City of Kimberley. Additional trail work has been done by Kimberley Nordic Racers team members and their families. Tembec has burned their remaining slash piles, with KNC undertaking final cleanup. We hope you enjoy the improved aesthetics, trail conditions and snow retention. Many thanks to Carol MacGregor (City of Kimberley), Mark McKinley (contractor), Wayne Gilbert (supervision), Todd Downie, Chris Carlson and Chris Downie (chippers), the Ktunaxa crew (Lindsay, Dan, Clint, Dean and Brady) and the rest of the hard-working crew. A big thanks as well to Teck for donating labor, material (chips) and haulage costs to cover all of Centennial trail.

Trail attendants

The club is looking for diligent, hard-working trail attendants for mostly weekend work for the coming season. Base rate is $8.50/hr. with increases possible based on performance. If you are interested or for more information, please contact Chris Heinemann at cheinemann@cyberlink.bc.ca or phone 427-5194.

Trail maps

New trail maps showing all of our new trails (sprint loop, Highlander, Double Scotch, Screwdriver, Meadow) are being produced and will be available once our existing stock of maps is used up.

Kootenay Cup 2009 - racers and volunteers needed

Our annual Kootenay Cup races are being held on Saturday, February 14th and Sunday, February 15th. Information and entry forms are available here and you can register online at Zone 4. Please plan to race; if you don't want to race, please plan to volunteer. Here are the course maps: Saturday free technique mass start (10km, 5km, 3.5km), Sunday classic technique individual start (15km and 7.5km, 4km, 3km), Both days (0.5km and 1.5km).

Kimberley Nordic Racers

The Kimberley Nordic Racers is a small but enthusiastic group of junior racers. Team members have been training since May, and four times per week since September. Team members will be travelling to races throughout BC and Alberta through the ski season and hoping to qualify to represent BC at the national championships in Ontario in March. But it's never too late to join! If you are between 11 and 18, reasonably fit, keen to train hard and want to learn to ski fast, please contact coach Paul Freeze (427-1925 oldsquidge@yahoo.ca) or Bill Green (427-5554 wggreen6@gmail.com).

Details:

Cross country skiing (x/c skiing) was practised on the mining exploration trails at the base of North Star Mountain for decades before the first specific nordic trail, Centennial, was constructed in 1967. The Kimberley Nordic trail system trail network now consists of a variety of double track set trails of varying degrees of difficulty and length, complete with centre skating lanes. There are also a variety of single track set secondary trails and a 3.3 kilometer lit loop for night skiing.

Night Skiing every night, all winter long - Dusk until 10:00pm!
