Ability Levels Guide

 

This guide is to help adult skiers in assessing their ability level in order to select the best programs to match their goals and needs and provide the best possible learning experience.

 

Quick Self-Assessment

​

Beginner Without Experience
"I'm new to cross-country skiing and want to learn the fundamentals."

 

Beginner With Experience
"I've skied before and am comfortable on green trails but want to build confidence and skills."

 

Intermediate
"I can ski 10 km comfortably and am confident on most blue trails."

 

Strong Intermediate
"I can ski 15–20 km comfortably and am confident on all blue trails and some black trails."

 

Advanced
"I am comfortable on all club terrain and enjoy challenging skis, training, loppets, or racing."

 

Beginner Without Experience

 

You belong here if:

  • You have never cross-country skied before or have only ever been out once or twice.

  • You are learning the basics of moving, stopping, turning, climbing, and descending.

  • You want instruction on equipment, trail etiquette, and ski technique.

  • You are looking for a supportive and welcoming introduction to the sport.

  • Stadium and practice areas

  • Beginner terrain

  • Very limited trail skiing

  • Equipment and ski setup

  • Balance and mobility on skis

  • Basic classic or skate technique

  • Stopping and turning

  • Building confidence and independence

 

Goal

Become comfortable skiing on beginner terrain and ready to explore green trails.

 

 

Beginner With Experience

 

You belong here if:

  • You have some skiing experience.

  • You can ski green trails comfortably.

  • You are developing confidence on hills and corners.

  • You want to improve your technique and endurance.

  • You enjoy a relaxed pace with regular coaching and practice opportunities.

 

Terrain Comfort

  • Green trails

  • Gentle rolling terrain

  • Limited blue trails

 

Focus

  • Balance and glide

  • Some climbing and descending skills

  • Technique development

  • Fitness and endurance

  • Building confidence on a variety of terrain

 

Goal

Become comfortable skiing for 45-60 minutes and confidently navigate green trails.

 

 

 

Intermediate

You belong here if:

  • You ski regularly throughout the season.

  • You can comfortably ski 8–15 km.

  • You are confident on most blue trails.

  • You can manage moderate climbs and descents.

  • You want to improve technique, efficiency, and fitness.

 

Terrain Comfort

  • Green trails

  • Blue trails

  • Select black trail sections

 

Focus

  • Technique refinement

  • Uphill and downhill skills

  • Increased endurance

  • Efficiency skiing

  • Preparing for longer recreational ski outings

 

Goal

Develop strong classic or skate skiing skills and confidence on varied terrain.

 

 

 

Strong Intermediate

 

You belong here if:

  • You are confident on all blue trails.

  • You can comfortably ski 15–20 km.

  • You ski regularly and are looking for more challenge.

  • You are comfortable skiing in a variety of snow conditions.

  • You enjoy longer outings and continuous improvement.

 

Terrain Comfort

  • Green trails

  • Blue trails

  • Some black trails

 

Focus

  • Intermediate to advanced technique refinement

  • Fitness and endurance development

  • Efficient climbing and descending

  • Fitness goals or event and loppet preparation

 

Goal

Become a skilled, efficient skier capable of handling most club terrain confidently.

 

 

Advanced

You belong here if:

  • You are confident on all club trails, including black terrain.

  • You regularly ski 20 km or more.

  • You enjoy challenging terrain and higher intensity training sessions.

  • You may participate in loppets, races, or performance-focused events.

  • You are interested in maximizing fitness and skiing performance.

  • All terrain

  • Variable snow conditions

  • Long climbs and technical descents

 

Focus

  • Advanced technical development

  • High-level fitness and endurance

  • Structured training

  • Race and loppet preparation

  • Personal performance goals
