KIMBERLEY NORDIC RACERS

About the Kimberley Nordic Racers

The KNC Nordic Racers program spans the "Training to Train" through to the "Training to Win" stages of the Long Term Athlete Development model endorsed by Nordiq Canada and CCBC. The Nordic Racers program has approximately a dozen athletes who are overseen by the Head Coach on a day-to-day basis and it is offered year-round. The program encourages a high level of competition in nordic racing; it also offers athletes many opportunities to learn important life skills, such as goal setting, work ethic, mental training, healthy eating habits, time management and life balance. Members of the team have won medals at the BC Winter Games and National Championships. Several team members are currently on the BC Ski Team or the BC Development Squad.

This group trains regularly together every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Newcomers generally train less often. Training includes activities such as strength and core exercises, plyometrics, roller skiing, running, hiking, road cycling, team sports, running with poles (or ski striding), and of course skiing when there is snow on the ground. Training intensities are periodized appropriately for the winter season. Involvement in our “ski camps” is encouraged in late May (on snow), end of September in Kimberley, and in October and possibly early November in Canmore on Frozen Thunder. Cross country skiing is a very technical sport, and it is strongly recommended that skiers spend as much time as possible training on snow in order to improve their technique.

Racing is encouraged on the BC Cup circuit, as well as on the Kootenay Cup circuit. As skiers advance, they will be brought to the Western Canadian Championships and the Canadian National Championships, with opportunities to also go to the Junior World Trials. Coaching and waxing support are available for the races. Generally the team travels to races for weekends 7-9 times per racing season (which runs from early December to the end of March).

Athletes are encouraged to have skate and classic equipment, as well as a pair of warm-up/rock skis for both techniques.
