Nordic Racers Update - February 2012
Your Kimberley Nordic Racers have had a very intense program this season. Besides a very active summer program they attended preseason camps; here in September, then two camps in Canmore in November. The first on preserved snow and later to Canmore/Lake Louise for a ski camp. During the season the older racers have been training at least four times per week; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, while the younger racers train twice a week often with the older racers.
Races attended this year were: Dawn Mtn Challenge, Golden; Alberta Cup in Canmore, Kootenay Cup here in Kimberley and this weekend (Feb 11, 12) Kootenay Cup in Nelson. The team also attended the Western Canadian Championships in Canmore. Next weekend (Feb 18, 19) they will be in Salmon Arm at the BC Championships. They will also attend the Midget Championships in Kelowna in March. We'll keep you apprised of other races as they happen.
Some of the older racers have had great results. Nicole Perrin, who trained with Dave Woods (ex Canadian National Coach) at BlackJack last season, attended the NorAm in Rossland and the World Junior Trials in Whistler. At the Western Canadians Nicole placed 5th in the mass start 10k, while Colin Ferrie placed 5th in the sprint. At the Eastern Canadians in Ottawa Colin placed 6th in the 30k Classic and 7th in Sprint. We wish these hard working racers luck and give many thanks to their coaches Paul Freeze and Bill Green.

Racing Program:
Our junior racers train hard, compete and have lots of fun year round beginning in May and continuing through the summer until the following March. The 2010-11 team includes boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 18. The team includes a Track Attack program of 9 to 12 year old skiers as well as an older group. The older group trains together thrice weekly during the summer and four times a week through the fall and winter. Older team members also train on their own in accordance with annual and detailed weekly training plans. Skiers compete at regional, provincial and national events in skate and classic, sprint and distance and individual and team events. No skiing experience is necessary to join the team, just a willingness to learn and work hard.
